Self-Care Every Day
Self-care is a word we often hear these days. Does it mean getting a massage, a pedi or going to a day spa? Is it going to the gym, Pilates or yoga class? Is it taking time out from your busy routine for precious ‘me time’?
Self-care can certainly be all these lovely things and more…
Self-care is all the practices and activities that enhance and develop your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. It’s also an attitude – knowing that the precious and unique person that is you, deserves to be looked after every single day.
At the heart of self-care is listening to what your body needs and learning to be a good friend to your body. Self-care can refer to the most simple things like remembering to drink enough water, going to the bathroom when you need to, eating your lunch on time, getting enough rest and sleep. Putting down devices, giving your mind a break, getting outside for a walk, taking a nature bath and breathing in fresh air are more examples.
Self-care is also about more complex things such as also knowing when to call it a day, instead of pushing through. It’s the letting go of self-judgement and criticism and cultivating kindness and compassion for yourself. It can also mean knowing your boundaries and when to say ‘no’ to requests that take up too much of your time and energy.
Self-care doesn’t have to be an occasional treat, or a reward for something. It’s a daily commitment to yourself, to your wellbeing – so that every day you will develop the physical, mental and emotional resources that help you get through he challenges of life.
If you don’t already do so, try adding a self-care activity or practice to your daily to do list, and if possible placing it at the top of your list, as a priority. Or you could try having a dedicated self-care calendar that you keep somewhere prominent and check regularly.
Remember that things don’t always go according to plan and sometimes self-care falls off the list. Bringing kindness to yourself, try again, whenever you can. It won’t be long before self-care becomes a natural part of your daily routine, playing an important role in your overall wellbeing.
Keep trying and don’t give up. Remember that you deserve self-care every day.
